Dear Friends,
It has been a difficult year for the church in a variety of ways including financially. The Investment Pool returns have not performed well over the past two years. 80% of the Mission Center budget is funded from the Investment Pool source and we are not immune to poor performance rates.

In order to preserve resources, the Mission Center has to decrease the amount we draw from our Investment Pool balance. Since most of our budget goes to support personnel, the impact of this decision is substantial.

As Steve (MCFO) and I were looking at ways to reduce the Mission Center budget, we entered into conversation with DeziRae Astle who serves on Mission Center staff as Mission Coordinator. As we engaged honestly and openly, we mutually agreed that it was time for DeziRae to begin to look for new employment. We will be able to financially support DeziRae for the next four months as she begins her search to find what is next for her professionally.

We are grateful to DeziRae for her 10 years of service to the Mission Center. Her passion for justice, her deep love for those who others ignore or shut out, her exciting ideas for worship, and her ability to be in strong relationship with our youth are just some of the ways her ministry has made a difference in the Mission Center.

DeziRae changed the core of who we are as a community. We love a little more fully, listen a little more carefully, and celebrate Jesus in our lives a little more joyfully because she has brought us her heart in ministry. I am forever grateful to her for the time we’ve worked together and I know you are too.

This news will undoubtedly raise a wide spectrum of emotions in our community. If you have questions or concerns, please contact me at snewcom@cofchrist.org. More information about our financial situation and decisions will be shared with pastors on May 3. As always, resources contributed by congregations to the Mission Center make a big difference in our capacity to do ministry. I remain ever committed to you and to Jesus Christ, whose mission is our mission.
