Dear Friends,
I have this quote in my office: “No great thing is created suddenly. There must be time. Give your best and always be kind.” Epictetus
In reflecting on why I like these words I think it is because they connect me to the “slow work of God” (and of our community). Slow doesn’t mean negative. Taking time doesn’t mean wasting time. In the journey, no matter how long it takes, there is space for kindness and respect for the time it takes to be on that journey.
You see, I rush. I like to move fast, get to places early, get things done. I could easily fall into the trap of believing that anything that takes time isn’t worth the wait. But if I go there, I step away from what I know to be true: Mission is a long journey in the same direction. Maybe what’s important isn’t how long this takes but how we live in community and imagine and act into Christ’s mission as a people of God.
Maybe what matters is how kind we are to one another.
I’m going to slow down this next week. I’m going to stop and take time for intentional prayer. I’m going to engage in spiritual practices that connect me with the Creative Mystery – the great Manager of Time. I”m going to seek to be kind in word and deed.
I invite you to join me.
I know I won’t be perfect but I will be sincere. As we travel on this journey together I hope we will all honor the “great things” that are being created in God’s time.
Zion comes, my friends, and we live God’s imagination, justice and peace together.
May it be so.
With love,
Shandra Newcom
