RMMC Weekly Update
March 4, 2015
From Tim Ashburn
Greetings Rocky Mountain Mission Center!
Libbie recognized her friend before I did, because the person walking her friend was not Renee who we see on the trail from time to time. Instead it was another person, who was helping Renee while she recovered from her recent second hip replacement surgery. The otherwise passerby became someone known as I engaged her with the name of “Renee” familiar to both of us. We were strangers and in an instance we had become at least “non-strangers” with the mention of a mutual acquaintance. At the moment of encounter, I felt open, seen, and a sense of belonging with the wider largely unknown community that surrounds me. I wonder how many people seek a sense of belonging.
In her book, “Christianity After Religion,” Diana Butler Bass shares these thoughts, “Jesus began with the inner life, the heart. Indeed, when he said, ‘You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free,’ he was not speaking of a philosophical idea or a set of doctrines. The truth was that the disposition of the heart was the ground of truth….And, as Jesus also said, love is shaped through a relationship with God and neighbor, steeped in self-love and self-awareness. Faith, truth, freedom—all of it—is relational, not speculative.” (p.205)
Having grown up in a church where right beliefs were paramount. I am aware of the grip that this idea can have on us. Our minds categorize ourselves and others with the answer to the question, “What do you believe?” It is a distinguishing question which unintentionally let’s everyone know where they “belong.” The real truth however is our common longing for connection, which is the true measure by which we come together in community, not by a set of beliefs. Again, Bass shares that the invitation to the fishermen was Jesus first act of ministry and that, “Christianity did not begin with a confession. It began with an invitation into friendship, into creating a new community, into forming relationships based on love and service.” (p. 205)
When I open myself up without self-imposed boundaries, I free the possibilities for God’s desires to manifest in my life. We are being called to rekindle our affirmation that God’s Spirit talks to us today, that it leads us in very real ways for the betterment of our world. I challenge you to be aware of that voice that comes to us in our stillness.
Blessings,
Tim
MISSION PRAYER:
“God, where will your Spirit lead today? Help me be fully awake and ready to respond. Grant me courage to risk something new and become a blessing of your love and peace.” Amen
